Wherever Prince William goes, the crowds cheer. As he strolls through the streets of St Andrews, he smiles shyly at the people who have come out to greet him. It is his first day at the famous Scottish university. He will spend the next three years here studying art history. The cameras have loved William since he was a baby but, in recent years, journalists have not been able to photograph the young prince. After his mother, Lady Diana, died in a car crash while escaping from the paparazzi, his father, Prince Charles, got an agreement from the press. He asked them to leave his sons alone while they were still at school, and they agreed. He did this in order to protect the privacy of his two sons. Now that Prince William has reached eighteen he is in the spotlight once again. It is rare to get an interview with him. But…. last month William agreed to an exclusive interview with the Daily Globe's Judy Pearson. Our chief reporter, Rachel Pascoe, spoke to Judy earlier this week about the interview. Rachel: Judy, how did it feel to get such a scoop? Judy: Terrific! William is very charming and easy to talk to. Rachel: He’s just taken a year off from his studies, hasn’t he? Tell us about that first of all. Judy: Well, he’s been working as a volunteer in a camp in Chile for a year. He’s been teaching English to Chilean students too. He really enjoyed his time off. Everybody loved him in Chile. In fact, people want to see him wherever he goes. Rachel: How does he cope with the constant attention? Judy: Of course he would like to keep his life private but he knows that this is impossible. He’s a typical teenager who likes music, parties, sport. The problem is because he’s a prince he just can’t behave like other normal teenagers. His mother felt the same pressure from the media. Rachel: Many people believe that it was the press who caused Diana’s death. Did you speak to William about this? Judy: Yes, he doesn’t blame anyone. He just feels extremely sad about it. Rachel: What has he been doing to cope with the death of his mother? Judy: All kinds of things. Most importantly, he’s been keeping himself busy – this trip to Chile is just one example. Rachel: And now the excitement of starting university….. Judy: Yes, he’s really looking forward to it. Get the Gossip Page 35. 23
