Position of adverbial clauses
The position of adverbial clauses depends on what we want our listeners or readers to
focus on (pay most attention to). If we want them to focus on the information in the
adverbial clause, we might put it first. Usually, however, the adverbial clause goes after
the main clause.
When we put the adverbial clause before the main clause, we need to put a comma
after the adverbial clause.

In this activity you will practise using adverbial clauses.
Complete the sentences below. Use your own ideas.
Example
In order to ___________________ you need a dictionary.
In order to learn English, you need a dictionary.

2. Whenever ______________________, he likes to see a movie.

4. When _________________________, I called the police.

SPEAKING Chain story
1. Your teacher will read a sentence to the class.
2. Listen to the sentence and discuss with your partner a possible next
sentence, to continue the story. Try to include an adverbial clause.
3. Raise your hand if you want to say the next sentence.
4. Your teacher will correct your sentence and write it on the board. You will
get two points when you use an adverbial clause.
5. Repeat from step 2. The winners will be the pair with the most points at
the end of the story.
