SPEAKING Role play
1. Work with a partner. One of you is Jin Hee. The other is Steve.
2. Practise the conversation.
3. Perform the conversation for the class.
Jin Hee: …I want to talk to you about [my Tae Kwon Do classes]. Maybe you can
give me some advice.
Steve: Of course, what's the problem?
Jin Hee: Well I'm not sure if it's a good idea to move my classes. I know that the
new centre will be nice and big but I'm not sure that all my students will
want to move. I have a good class at Harry's Gym and if I move the class,
I might lose students. What do you think I should do?
Steve: Umm, why don't you ask your students what they think?
Jin Hee: Yeah, that's a good idea but I don't want Harry to know about it. If he
knew, he wouldn't be very happy.
Steve: Oh you shouldn't worry about that. Harry would understand – it's business
and you need to do the best thing for your class.
LANGUAGE FOCUS 03 The second conditional
In this activity we look at the structure and use of the second conditional.
1.
Jin Hee says:
If I had more information about the centre, it would be easier to decide.
It is difficult for Jin Hee to decide what to do because she doesn't have enough
information. Jin Hee wishes her situation was different. She says, “If I had more
information…”.
She uses a second conditional sentence. We use the second conditional to talk about
imagined (not real) events. These events might happen or might not.
2.
Jin Hee says:
Yeah, that's a good idea but I don't want Harry to know about it. If he
knew, he wouldn't be very happy.
Jin Hee doesn't want Harry to know about her idea to move the class. She is not going
to tell him. She talks about a situation that is unlikely to happen, "If he knew…". We
can use the second conditional to talk about unlikely future events.
