LANGUAGE FOCUS 03 Written reports What is a report? What type of language do we use to write one? Purpose A report is a piece of factual writing (about real things), often based on research of some kind. The purpose of a report is to give information on a particular topic or subject, so it includes lots of facts about that topic. In a report we do not give our opinion. Stages We write a report in stages. 1. In the first stage or introduction we start by saying what the report will be about - the topic. During the last 10 years there have been some big breakthroughs in gene technology … New procedures relating to genes, such as cloning and genetically modifying food, have been developed in recent years. 2. In the body we write about the aspects of the topic, or sub-topics. We write about these in separate paragraphs. We introduce each new aspect or sub-topic with a topic sentence followed by supporting sentences, which give more information. 175 QUESTLANGUAGE
