GELEV6 Unit 03 Topic 02.doc
To talk about the imaginary or unlikely situation, we use if + past perfect.
To describe the probable result, we use would/wouldn't have + past participle.
We separate the two clauses with a comma.
Bert says:
Bert: If I had studied harder at school, I could have done law.
(Bert didn't study hard at school, so he didn't study law.)
We can also use could have, may have and might have if the result is less certain.
Look
had studied harder, I could have been a professor.
I
had been born rich, I would have inherited a lot of money. If
he had married, he wouldn't have travelled as much.
