LANGUAGE FOCUS 04 Adverbial clauses of concession and
manner
In this activity we will look at adverbial clauses of concession and manner.
1. Adverbial clauses of concession
Claudia says:
Claudia: Although they haven't got the best voices, they're good
performers.
Claudia thinks the Backstreet Boys haven't got good voices but she still thinks they are
good performers. These two ideas are opposite – they contrast. She uses, "Although"
to start a clause that contrasts with the main clause.
Jackie says:
Jackie: Yeah, I quite liked the dancing. It was fun, even though they
looked a little unsure at times.
Jackie thinks the dancing was fun but she also thinks that sometimes it wasn't very
good. These ideas contrast. She uses even though to start a clause that contrasts
with the main clause.
Although they haven't got the best voices and even though they looked a little
unsure at times are adverbial clauses of concession.
We use adverbial clauses of concession when we contrast two ideas in a sentence.
We can use conjunctions although, even though, though and while to start
