General English Level 6 Version 2.1 © 2004 acl Pty Ltd GELEV6 Unit 02 Topic 03.doc Supporting paragraphs: A Many studies have shown that the longer an individual has spent in jail the harder it is to rehabilitate them into normal life. Prison is a brutal place where the motto “every man for himself” rules. People do not learn how to help and live peacefully with one another in such a place. Do we really want our young people to stay longer in these places and therefore have little chance of being able to live a normal life when they come back into society? B Alternative uses of natural forest areas for recreation and tourism make much more sense in the long term than chopping trees down. Tourism is a growth industry and is potentially worth millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs to our community. On the other hand the forestry industry creates very few jobs and profits are declining. C The truth is that in our modern society it is a necessity for many mothers to go out to work. The days of a single income family, with the male bringing home the wages, are long gone. Nowadays most families cannot survive on a single income. Part 2. Parts of a letter to the editor 1. When the price increased 6 months ago, the government promised there would be no more increases. Since then, the quality of the bus service has, in fact, decreased. Buses are often late and many buses are dirty and smelly. The government should be encouraging more people to use the bus system. However if the price increases many people will not be able to afford bus fares. This will lead to more traffic and pollution problems. In my opinion the government’s decision to increase the price of bus tickets is totally wrong. For all these reasons the price of bus fares should not be increased. Bay City already has major traffic and pollution problems. When the city council increased the bus prices last time, they found that traffic jams increased and air quality decreased. As such the price rise cannot be justified. Since then, the quality of the bus service has, in fact, decreased. Buses are often late and many buses are dirty and smelly. 56
